The play follows Sian, an enigmatic woman of our times, through three decades of her life. Her hopes for real love are brought into sharp focus with the realisation of her desire for both a young actor and an ageing womaniser. ‘Counterpoint’ is a lyrical and emotional evaluation of the way we live now. Commitment and betrayal, loyalty and passion, hopes and regrets – all have their place as part of this personal story of will and determination. Cast size: 4.
‘New musicals on the fringe are rare occurrences. All the more reason, then, to welcome ‘Counterpoint’….Shirlie Roden wrote the book, music and lyrics and for the most part, the piece is a real achievement. Much of it is through-sung, with characters airing their thought in song while in between the numbers, short scenes move the plot along….It’s an intriguing situation which Roden enlivens with some good songs – ‘What About Love?’ is particularly affecting, and ‘Saving Grace’ is a neatly ironic point number – and she has some pertinent things to say about passion, betrayal and the fear of commitment. These are smart people and they are furnished with some very smart dialogue….better entertainment value than most of the current crop of West End blockbusters.’ (What’s On In London)
